Frequently Asked Questions
What are some e_e words?
The e_e pattern is less common than the others, but useful examples include these, Pete, eve, theme and Steve, and longer words like complete and compete. In each, the silent e at the end makes the first e say its name. UFLI Lesson 57 pairs e_e with a review of a_e, i_e and o_e, which keeps all the silent e patterns in play.
What is a CVCe word example?
A CVCe word has a consonant, a vowel, a consonant and a final silent e, like cake, bike, home and these. The e does not make a sound, but it changes the vowel from short to long, so cap becomes cape and pin becomes pine. Children who spot the pattern quickly can read a large set of new words with one simple rule.
What is the difference between short e and long e?
Short e is the sound in bed, pet and ten, and long e says the letter’s name, as in these, Pete and me. Many children find short e and short i hard to tell apart, so saying pairs like pet and pit slowly can help. Hearing small differences like these is a key part of phonemic awareness.
Which spellings make the long e sound?
Long e can be spelled several ways: e_e as in these, e at the end of short words like he and me, and later ee as in see, ea as in eat, and y as in happy. Children do not need them all at once. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) recommended explicit teaching of how spellings map to sounds, and adding one spelling at a time keeps the load manageable.
