Frequently Asked Questions
How is a vowel team different from a diphthong?
A vowel team is a spelling: two or more letters that work together for one vowel sound, like ai in rain. A diphthong is a sound that glides from one vowel position to another within a syllable, like /oi/ in coin or /ou/ in cloud. The teams in this review mostly spell long vowels, and the gliding diphthong sounds usually come a little later in a phonics sequence.
What are vowel digraphs?
A vowel digraph is a pair of letters that spells one vowel sound, such as ee in tree, oa in boat and ay in day. Teams with three letters, like igh in night, are sometimes called trigraphs. Most teachers use vowel team as the umbrella term, so you will often see the two names used interchangeably.
How can I tell which vowel teams my child still finds hard?
Listen to your child read a mixed review book and jot down each word that causes a stumble. Patterns soon show up, such as mixing ea and ai, and those teams can get extra practice with a few word cards and a reread. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that guided oral reading with feedback builds fluency, and a short session like this is one simple form of it.
What does UFLI Lesson 88 review?
UFLI Lesson 88 reviews the long vowel teams taught just before it: ai and ay, ee, ea and ey, oa, ow and oe, and ie and igh. The vowel team decodable books on this page mix these spellings in each story, with words like aid and aim, so children read every team side by side. Some titles are free to read online, and our guide to decodable books explains how review stories are built.
