Frequently Asked Questions
What is an affix?
An affix is a word part added to a base word to change its meaning or its job in a sentence. Prefixes, such as re-, un- and dis-, go at the start, and suffixes, such as -ful, -ness and -tion, go at the end. So a suffix is one kind of affix and a prefix is another, and some languages also use infixes inside a word, though English rarely does.
What are some common prefixes and suffixes in these books?
The books for UFLI Lesson 128 draw on common prefixes such as un-, re-, pre- and dis-, in words like unpack, refill, preheat and dislike. They also mix in suffixes children have already met, including -ful, -less, -ly, -tion, -ture, -ness, -ment and -able, in words like helpful, quickly, action, picture, darkness, payment and washable.
How do prefix, root and suffix fit together?
Think of it as prefix, root, suffix: many longer words are built from a root with a prefix, a suffix or both. Reusable is re plus use plus able, unkindly is un plus kind plus ly, and refreshment is re plus fresh plus ment. Teaching children to peel off the prefix, then the suffix, and read the root in the middle turns a daunting word into three small ones.
What is the point of a review lesson?
A review lesson brings back affixes that were first taught one by one, such as re-, un-, -ness and -tion, and mixes them on the same page. Children have to check each word part instead of expecting the same ending every time, which quickly shows which affixes are secure. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that systematic phonics instruction helps children from kindergarten through sixth grade, and our guide to reading fluency explains how accuracy grows into smooth reading.
