Frequently Asked Questions
What are blends in phonics?
A blend is a group of two or three consonants that sit together while each keeps its own sound, such as the bl in black, the st in stop or the str in strap. Children read a blend by saying each sound quickly, so the sounds run together. Blends are different from digraphs, where two letters make one new sound.
How can I explain blends to a five-year-old?
Try a slide: say each sound slowly, /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/, then slide them together faster until you hear stop. Point out that you can still hear both the /s/ and the /t/ at the start, which is what makes it a blend. Short, playful practice like this builds the ability to hear and work with the sounds in words, and reading aloud together gives children plenty of words to try it on.
What are some examples of blend words?
Common two-letter blends appear in words like flag, crab, stop, spin, milk and lamp, and three-letter blends appear in strap, scrub and splash. Words that combine a digraph with a blend, such as shrub, thrill and chest, are a step up, because children must spot the digraph first. The books for UFLI Lesson 53 include words like these, which makes them a good check on how secure these skills are.
What are CCCVC words?
CCCVC describes a word pattern: three consonant letters, then a vowel, then one more consonant, as in strap, scrub, split and shrug. Some start with a three-letter blend, and others start with a digraph plus a consonant, like the shr in shrug. A meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics instruction supports word reading, and longer words like these show whether decoding is becoming automatic.
