Frequently Asked Questions

Which short ng words can my child sound out?

Short ng words are easy to group by vowel: bang, hang and sang; king, ring, sing and wing; long and song; and hung, lung and rung. Grouping them this way lets children hear how the vowel changes while the ending stays the same. The books for UFLI Lesson 51 use words like these, so children can read ng inside real sentences.

Can an English word start with ng?

Everyday English words do not start with ng, although a few names and words borrowed from other languages do. In English, ng comes at the end of a word or syllable, as in sing and ring, or in the middle of longer words such as singer. That makes it a useful clue for children: when they see ng, they can expect it near the end.

Is ng a digraph?

Ng is usually taught as a digraph because the two letters spell one sound, written /ŋ/, which is not a mix of /n/ and /g/. Some teachers also call ang, ing, ong and ung glued or welded sounds, because the vowel before ng changes slightly and is easier to learn as a chunk. Either way, children should read ng as a single sound rather than blending n and g separately.

How can I help my child hear the ng sound?

Say pairs of words that differ only in their final sound, such as sin and sing, ran and rang, or thin and thing, and ask your child which one ends with a hum at the back of the mouth. Practice like this builds phonemic awareness, and the National Reading Panel (2000) reported that teaching children to hear and play with sounds improved their reading.
