Frequently Asked Questions
What are some decodable words that start with wh?
Decodable words that start with wh include when, whip, whizz, wham, which and whisk. In most accents today, wh simply says /w/, so the wh in when sounds just like the w in wet. The main exceptions are who, whom, whose and whole, where wh says /h/, and children usually learn these as words to know by heart.
What are the wh question words?
The question words are who, what, when, where, why and which, plus how, which is often grouped with them even though it has no w. They are some of the most common words in children’s books, so recognising wh at the start of a word pays off quickly. Only when and which are fully decodable at this stage, since the vowels in what, where and why follow patterns taught later.
Which wh words suit first graders?
Good wh words for first grade are short and follow patterns children already know, such as when, whip, whizz, which, whisk and whack. Reading these in sentences, not only in lists, helps children connect the spelling to meaning. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) recommended regular practice reading text as children learn how spellings map to sounds, and the decodable text in the books for UFLI Lesson 50 offers exactly that.
What sound does ph make?
The digraph ph says /f/, as in graph, phone and dolphin. It is far less common than f in everyday words, and many ph words come from Greek, which is why they often turn up in science and other longer vocabulary. For now, children only need to know that when they see p and h together, the /f/ sound is the one to try first.
