Frequently Asked Questions

What are some o_e words?

Common o_e words include bone, code, hole, home, hope, joke, nose, note, pole, rode, rope, stone and those. In each one, the silent e at the end signals that the o should say its name, as in go. Reading them in the short stories for UFLI Lesson 56 lets children use the pattern in context rather than only in word lists.

Is cold a long o word?

Cold does have a long o sound, even though there is no silent e. It belongs to a small group of words, such as old, gold, told and fold, where o says its name before ld. Children usually learn these as a separate pattern, so it is worth pointing out that long o can be spelled in several ways.

What is a long vowel silent e?

A long vowel silent e pattern, often written VCe, is a vowel, then one consonant, then an e that makes no sound but tells the first vowel to say its name. It works with a_e, i_e, o_e and u_e, and less often with e_e. A meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics instruction, which teaches patterns like this one directly, helped young children learn to read.

How can I help my child tell short o and long o apart?

Write a few pairs, such as hop and hope, not and note, or rod and rode, and read them aloud together. Ask your child to look at the end of each word first: if there is a silent e, the o is probably long. Doing this before reading a new book gives children a quick strategy for every page, and paired reading is an easy way to try it together.
