Frequently Asked Questions
What sound does -ture make?
In most words, -ture says /cher/, as in picture, nature and future. Say picture slowly and you can hear the t and the u blending into a /ch/ sound, which is why the spelling can surprise children at first. Once children hear it, they can read many longer words by splitting off the ending first: pic-ture, mix-ture and fur-ni-ture.
What does the suffix -ture mean?
Like many prefixes and suffixes in English, -ture comes from Latin and usually names an action, a process or its result. Sometimes the base word is easy to spot, as when mix becomes mixture and fix becomes fixture. In other words, such as nature and picture, the base is hidden in Latin, so children can simply learn -ture as a reliable chunk to read.
How is -ture different from -sure?
The two endings look similar but sound different. The ending -ture says /cher/, as in capture and texture, while -sure usually says /zher/, as in measure and treasure, or /sher/, as in pressure. When a child is stuck on a spelling, saying the word slowly and listening for /ch/ or /zh/ usually points to the right ending.
Which -ture words will my child meet in these books?
The books for UFLI Lesson 120 use words like picture, nature, creature, adventure, future, texture, furniture and temperature. Many of these name things children can see, which makes the illustrations useful. Takacs and Bus (2020) found that pictures matched to the text support young readers’ attention and comprehension, so pause to look at the picture after your child has read the word.
