Frequently Asked Questions

What words have oi in them?

Common oi words include coin, oil, boil, soil, point, join and voice. The oi spelling nearly always sits inside a word or syllable rather than at the end, which is a useful clue when children spell. Stories for UFLI Lesson 95 place these words in short sentences, so children read them as part of a story rather than a drill.

What are some oy words, and where does oy go?

The oy spelling usually comes at the end of a word or syllable, as in boy, toy, joy, coy and enjoy. It also appears in the middle of longer words when a new syllable starts after it, as in royal and loyal. Sorting word cards into an oi pile and an oy pile is a quick activity that helps children notice where each spelling belongs.

How can I explain a diphthong to my child?

A diphthong is a vowel sound that slides from one position to another inside one syllable. Ask your child to say boy slowly and notice how the mouth starts rounded and then spreads into a smile. Short listening games like this build phonemic awareness, which helps children connect the sound they hear to the oi or oy they read.

Which words start with oi?

Only a few everyday words begin with oi, such as oil, oink and ointment. Most oi words have a consonant before the team, so children usually meet it in the middle of short words like coin and soil. Reading plenty of these words in context builds vocabulary as well as decoding, and Stanovich (1986) described how children who read more tend to grow their vocabulary faster.
