Frequently Asked Questions

What is an r-controlled vowel?

An r-controlled vowel is one whose sound changes because an r comes straight after it. The a in cat becomes /ar/ in cart, and the i in bid becomes /er/ in bird. Because the new sound matches neither the short nor the long vowel, children learn each vowel and r pair as one unit.

Is r-controlled the same as bossy r?

They describe the same idea. Bossy r is a child-friendly name teachers use, while r-controlled is the term you will see in phonics guides and syllable charts. A syllable with a vowel followed by r is called an r-controlled syllable, one of six syllable types many teachers use, alongside closed, open, vowel-consonant-e, vowel team and consonant-le.

What are some two-syllable r-controlled words?

Two-syllable words give review practice a step up: garden, market, corner, morning, sister, thirty, turkey and purple each contain an r-controlled syllable, and border and further contain two. Splitting these words and naming the r-controlled part in each syllable helps children read multisyllabic words with confidence. Jeanne Chall described second and third grade as a time when children consolidate decoding and build fluency, and longer words like these are part of that shift.

What does the UFLI Lesson 83 review cover?

UFLI Lesson 83 revisits the r-controlled vowels from the lessons before it: ar, or and ore, and the /er/ spellings er, ir and ur. The r controlled vowels decodable books on this page mix them in each story, which makes it easy to spot any pattern your child still confuses. A few titles are free to read online, and our article on decodable books explains how review text like this is built.
