Frequently Asked Questions
What does the suffix -less mean?
The suffix -less means without, so helpless means without help and fearless means without fear. Other common examples are careless, endless, spotless and homeless. Once children know what -less adds to a base word, they can work out words like these on their own as they read the UFLI Lesson 102 stories.
What is the opposite of the suffix -less?
The suffix -ful often works as the opposite, meaning full of, as in careful and careless or helpful and helpless. It can also mean the amount that fills something, as in cupful, armful and handful. Pairing words like this is a quick way to show children that a small word part can change the whole meaning.
What are some common suffixes children learn early?
Early suffixes include -s and -es for plurals, -ed and -ing for actions, -er and -est for comparing, and -ly, -less and -ful for changing meaning. Knowing these parts helps children split long words into chunks, as in help, ful and ly in helpfully. Word parts like these are the focus of our article on morphology and decoding.
Why does -ful have only one l?
The word full has two l’s, but the suffix -ful is spelled with one, as in helpful, thankful and cupful. This is a handy spelling tip to teach directly, since children often write helpfull by mistake. The National Reading Panel (2000) reported spelling benefits from systematic phonics teaching for younger children, and short, regular practice helps the correct spelling stick.
