In the lower half of the image, The Girl is shown in a close-up view, beaming with a wide, joyful smile and rosy cheeks, looking directly at the viewer. Her voluminous hair fills much of the frame, with small colourful accessories (green and orange) scattered through it. The top portion of the image is a plain dark background, leaving space for text.

Every morning, Joy looks in the glass and says, 'Hello, curls. What are we doing today?' Her curls never say a thing back, but they always have a plan. A handful of clips, a good brush, and whoosh. Joy is bold and ready, hopeful for the day.

Page 2
On the left side of the image, The Girl stands outdoors on a sunny summer day, smiling confidently and sipping a cool drink with a straw while her enormous, voluminous hair is swept up high off her neck, billowing dramatically upward and to the right, with colourful clips and decorations scattered through it. The Dog sits beside her on the left, wearing sunglasses and looking up at her. The background is a bright, warm outdoor scene with yellow-green foliage and a light blue sky with white clouds, and a large shadow is cast on the ground from The Girl's hair. The right side of the image is open sky and plain background.

In summer, Joy's curls go up. Way, way up. They block out the hot sun. A long shadow spreads all around her. Joy sips her cool drink in the shade, blissful. Rex sits right beside her in his tiny sunglasses, looking happy. 'Glad to help, Rex,' Joy tells him.

Page 3
On the right side of the image, The Girl is running joyfully to the right, mid-stride with one foot off the ground, her face turned toward the viewer at a three-quarter angle with a broad smile. Her long hair flows dramatically behind her like a massive wave, stretching across much of the image, filled with pink flowers and green leaves. The Dog is running along below and behind her hair on the left-centre, small and energetic. The outdoor autumn scene features orange and red foliage on the trees, with fallen leaves scattered on the brown ground and drifting through the air.

In fall, Joy runs. Her curls fly out behind her like a wave full of flowers and leaves. They fill the path from end to end. Rex races to keep up, leaping over the leaves in his way. He runs on, breathless but joyful. But no one outruns Joy's curls.

Page 4
On the left side of the image, The Girl is walking through a snowy winter scene, smiling cosily as she wraps her voluminous hair around her face and shoulders like a scarf, holding it close with her hands. The Dog trots alongside her to the right, braving the cold. Small snowflakes fall around them against a wintry, pale blue-white outdoor backdrop. The right side of the image is open, plain background.

In winter, Joy does not need a scarf. She wraps her curls around her face and walks right into the snow. Snug and safe. Not one bit of cold gets past all those curls. Rex shivers beside her in the cold. 'Sorry, Rex,' Joy whispers. 'These curls are just for one of us.' Rex looks woeful.

Page 5
In the lower-right portion of the image, The Girl is shown from roughly the eyes up, looking downward with a calm, slightly wistful expression, her short curly hair visible — reflecting the text about having cut it short. In the upper-left corner, The Dog peeks into the frame from above, tongue out playfully. The background is a soft, light outdoor setting with scattered green grass strokes and a pale blue sky, with the top half of the image left mostly as plain background space.

Then one day, Joy cuts her curls. All of them. Short. Short curls are less hard to brush. But less hard is not always better. Rex peeks at Joy, clueless. Where did all the curls go? Now Joy must wait a full year for them to grow back.

Page 6
On the right side of the image, The Girl is lying on her back on a patch of grass in a park, her long hair spread out wide around her head. She has a relaxed, happy smile with her eyes gently closed, looking completely at ease. Small cute bugs walk along her outstretched arms. The Dog is curled up beside her on the grass, nestled close to her arm, looking content. Small green grass blades are scattered around them on the ground. The left side of the image is open white/plain background with just a few sparse grass marks.

When her curls grow back at last, Joy lies down in the grass and lets them spread out all around her like a blanket. She closes her eyes. Tiny bugs walk up her arms to say hello. Rex curls up beside her. 'We're back,' Joy whispers. It feels peaceful. It feels restful. It feels right.

Page 7
On the left side of the image, The Girl stands proudly with a big, beaming grin, her hands raised near her head as she shows off her hair styled into a large, dramatic square shape decorated with colourful pink and green hair clips or confetti-like accessories. She looks delighted and confident. Slightly to the right of centre, The Dog sits in the grass looking up at The Girl with an amused expression, with a few colourful clips or confetti pieces floating around. The scene is set outdoors on a bright day with soft green grass and a pale blue sky.

This time, Joy goes big. On dress-up day, Joy shapes her curls into a perfect four-side shape. What a shape! Pink and green clips all over the place. Flawless! Rex looks up at her as if he has never seen such a shape before. 'It's called style,' Joy tells him. She gives him a proud grin. Rex does not look thrilled.

Page 8
On the right side of the image, The Girl lies on her stomach on a grassy area, smiling contentedly as she draws on sheets of paper spread out in front of her. Her big, voluminous hair billows upward and to the left, stuffed with colourful pens and crayons in blue, pink, yellow, and other colours. The Dog peeks out from within The Girl's hair near the top, with just its head and paws visible, looking comfortable nestled among the curls. The left side of the image is open white and light blue background. The scene is outdoors on a bright day.

Joy's curls are a toolbox too. When Joy draws, she tucks every pen and crayon right into her curls. Need blue? Grab it from the left. Need yellow? Check the back. So useful. Then Rex pokes his head out from deep inside Joy's curls. He has been hiding in there all this time! Joy did not even see him go in.

Page 9
On the left side of the image, The Girl is shown from the shoulders up, looking upward with wide, delighted eyes and a big smile, her hands clasped together near her chin in excitement. Her enormous curly dark hair billows outward like a tree canopy, filling the upper-left portion of the image, with several colourful birds (teal, pink with yellow markings, green) nesting and perching throughout it. The Dog peeks out from the top of her hair, tongue out happily, nestled among the birds. The right side opens to a clear sky with soft green grass along the bottom, left open for text.

Mum sometimes says Joy's curls look like a bird's nest. So Joy thinks. What if it is one? Bluebirds could make a home right on her head. Rex could sit up there too, tongue out, playful and happy. Mum does not say no. She just walks away very slowly.

On the right side of the image, The Girl is walking confidently into the wind with a big, proud smile, her face turned toward the viewer at a three-quarter angle, her massive hair billowing dramatically behind and above her like a flag, filling much of the upper portion of the scene. The Dog stands upright beside her on the right, leaning into the wind alongside her. The outdoor scene is breezy and bright, with small colourful confetti-like shapes (pink and green) swirling in the air and patches of green grass at the bottom, conveying a windy, celebratory atmosphere. The left side is open sky/white background, clear of characters.

On windy days, Joy's curls fly out behind her like a big, bold flag. They sweep back and fill up the open sky. People stop. People watch. Joy and Rex lean into the wind, side by side, step by step. They feel powerful and free, like they own the street from end to end. And honestly? They do.

Page 11
In the lower-left corner, The Girl is shown in a close-up view, smiling joyfully with wide eyes, her voluminous hair spread across the bottom of the image and decorated with colourful headbands, pins, and bows in pink, blue, yellow, red, and green. The Dog peeks in from the lower-right edge, partially hidden behind The Girl's hair, looking up eagerly as if wanting a bow too. The top half of the image is plain white/light blue background. The scene is bright and cheerful, set indoors.

At bedtime, Joy sits down and brushes out every last tangle. She adds headbands, pins, and bows, one by one: pink, blue, yellow, red, and green. Joy is thankful for each and every bow. Rex creeps in behind Joy's curls, peeking out with those big hopeful eyes. He wants one too. Joy giggles and slips a bow on him. Rex looks proud and pleased. What a joyful bedtime!

Page 12
On the right side of the image, The Girl is shown in a close-up portrait, beaming with a wide, joyful smile, her hands raised up near her chin in delight. Her voluminous hair fills much of the frame, decorated with small colourful flowers and leaves in green, yellow, and pink. The left side of the image is left open as a light clearing framed by her flowing hair, providing space for text.

Will Joy ever cut her curls short again? No way. Long curls make every day feel like a birthday. Flowers tuck into Joy's curls like they grew there on purpose. Joyful from the roots to the tips. Every morning, Joy grins at her curls and says, 'Hello, curls. What are we doing today?' Her curls seem to have a plan.
