Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a rule for reading ough words?

The spelling ough has no single rule, which is why it is taught in small word families rather than as one sound. In UFLI Lesson 116 the focus is on two of them: /aw/ in the ought family (bought, brought, fought, sought, thought) and /ō/ in words like dough, though and although. Learning one family at a time gives children a pattern they can lean on.

How many sounds can ough make?

Across English, ough can stand for at least six sounds: /aw/ in thought, /ō/ in though, /oo/ in through, /uff/ in rough, /off/ in cough and /ow/ in bough. That variety is exactly why the books on this page stick to two of them. Augh and ough words often share the /aw/ sound, as in caught and bought, which is a handy link for spelling. Children can meet the other sounds later, once these two feel secure.

What ough words will my child read in these books?

Expect words such as bought, brought, fought, sought, thought, dough and though, along with longer forms like thoughtful and thoughtless. Seeing the same spelling in several words, inside a real story, helps children connect the letters to the word’s sound and meaning, a process called orthographic mapping. Depending on the title, a book may lean more on the /aw/ family or the /ō/ family.

Where do ough words come from?

The gh in these words once stood for a throaty sound, a little like the ch in the Scottish word loch. Over the centuries English speakers stopped saying it, but the spelling stayed, so ough now sounds different from word to word. Snow, Burns and Griffin (1998) recommend frequent, intensive opportunities to read, and short stories give a spelling this irregular the repeated practice it needs.
