Frequently Asked Questions
Which words have y as a vowel?
Y works as a vowel whenever it gives a syllable its vowel sound. It says /ī/ in short words like my and sky, /ē/ at the end of longer words like baby, funny and ivy, and a short i in words like gym. This lesson focuses on the /ē/ sound, which children see often in everyday words.
How do you know when y says /ē/ or /ī/?
Count the syllables first. When y ends a one-syllable word, like by or try, it usually says /ī/. When it ends a word with two or more syllables, like baby, lady or sunny, it usually says /ē/. Clapping the word before reading it turns a guess into a quick check, and our guide to decoding and morphology shows how syllables shape vowel sounds.
What are some common words ending in y?
Everyday words ending in y with the /ē/ sound include happy, funny, sunny, puppy, bunny, candy, baby, lady, pony and ivy. Many have a double consonant before the y, as in happy and puppy, which keeps the first vowel short. Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics instruction helps children learn to read, and noticing small details like this is part of reading systematically.
How does UFLI Lesson 74 build on y as long i?
UFLI Lesson 74 follows the /ī/ sound of y with the /ē/ sound at the end of longer words. The y as long e decodable books on this page may also include words like my and fly, so children decide which sound fits each word. Some titles are free to read online, and many of those include read-along audio.
