Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ch sometimes say /k/ or /sh/?

Most of the time ch says /ch/, as in chip. In many words that came into English from Greek, such as school, echo, chorus, character and stomach, it says /k/. In words from French, such as chef, machine and parachute, it says /sh/. Knowing that a word’s history shapes its spelling helps children stay flexible and try another sound when the first one does not fit.

What words start with gn?

Words that start with gn are silent g words: the g drops away and gn says /n/, as in gnat, gnaw, gnome and gnu. The same pair appears at the end of sign, design and assign. Pointing out that sign is related to signal and signature, where the g is heard, gives children a memorable reason for a letter they cannot hear.

What sound does gh make at the start of a word?

At the start of a word, gh says /g/, as in ghost, ghoul and gherkin, and the h stays silent. That is different from gh at the end of a word, where it is often silent, as in high and sigh, or says /f/, as in laugh and tough. In this lesson gh is the /g/ sound, found in gh words like ghost and aghast.

How can I help my child with silent letters like the t in listen?

Say the word normally, then look at it together and find the letter that makes no sound: the t in listen, fasten, castle and whistle. When your child reads the decodable books for UFLI Lesson 118 aloud to you, help with any silent letter they trip over. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that this kind of guided reading aloud, with an adult giving feedback, improves fluency.
