Frequently Asked Questions

What are soft c words?

Soft c words are words where c says /s/ instead of /k/, such as ice, face, race, nice, mice and place. In the first soft c words children read, the c usually comes right before a final e, which is also a silent e that makes the vowel long. Children meet soft c at the start of words later, in words like city, cent and cycle.

How does the soft c rule work?

The soft c rule says that c usually says /s/ when it comes before e, i or y, as in face, city and cycle, and /k/ before a, o, u or a consonant, as in cat, cot, cut and clap. In UFLI Lesson 60, the focus is the ce ending, which lets children apply the rule in short, familiar words. Knowing the rule turns a tricky letter into a predictable one, which is the whole point of phonics.

Is face soft c or hard c?

Face has a soft c, because the c comes right before e and says /s/. It also has a long a, since the final e makes the a say its name, so face shows two patterns at once. That makes it a good word to talk through slowly with a child who is just starting to read ce words.

What are some words with both hard and soft c?

Circus, cancel and concert each contain one hard c and one soft c: the c before i or e says /s/, and the c before u, a or o says /k/. These longer words come later in reading, but they are a fun way to test whether a child can apply the rule. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) recommended that children learn spelling conventions like this directly, rather than being left to work them out alone.
