Frequently Asked Questions
What words start with the prefix pre-?
Words with the prefix pre- include preheat, preview, pretest, prepay and preschool. In each one, pre- means before, so preheat means to heat something before you use it. Children working on UFLI Lesson 104 can use that meaning to work out new pre- words they meet in stories, which makes the prefix worth learning well.
What words start with the prefix re-?
Common re- words include redo, retell, reread, refill, replay, recap and react. The prefix usually means again, as in reread, or back, as in react. Because re- is one of the most common prefixes in English, it is worth practising until children read it without stopping. Retelling a story after reading it is a natural way to use the word retell itself.
Is pre a word on its own, or only a prefix?
In children’s reading, pre- works as a prefix rather than a word on its own. Some words simply start with the same letters, such as press and pretty, and some start with re without the prefix, such as red and reach. Covering the letters and checking whether a real base word is left helps children spot the difference.
What are some examples of prefix words children learn early?
Early prefixes include un- (unlock), re- (redo), pre- (preview), dis- (dislike) and mis- (misspell). Learning a handful of these helps children break longer words into parts they already know, and each prefix unlocks many new words at once. There is more on this kind of word study in our decoding and morphology guide.
