I Can Fight All Night! UFLI Foundations Lesson 88
Practice Words
Ned had a fine life. He had a home. He had a farm full of carrots. But every night, monsters came. Ned hid under his blanket like a potato. But not tonight! Ned got his bright blade. 'I am done being a potato,' he said.
Ned did not wait long. A big zombie came at him in the dark. It groaned. It smelled like old socks in mud. 'Gulp,' said Ned. His blade felt very small.
The zombie swung its big arms. Ned ducked and spun. He cut with his bright blade. The zombie burst into a puff of rotten stink. 'Yes!' Ned yelled. He held his blade high. 'Who is next? I can fight all night!'
The zombie left a lump of green stuff on the grass. Ned got it. 'Yuck. But this might help.' Click. Click. Click. In the dark, a bony thing was creeping right up behind him.
Whack! An arrow shot past Ned and stuck in the grass between his feet. A skeleton came from the trees with more arrows. Click, click, click went its bones. 'Almost hit me!' Ned yelped. He dove sideways and hid behind a big birch tree.
Ned hid by the big birch tree. He was very still and very small. The skeleton hunted for him by the door. Its skull turned left, then right, then left. Click. Click. Click. Then click, click, closer still. The skeleton was right by his tree!
At once, Ned leaped from behind the tree, blade up high. The skeleton went for its arrows, but it was very slow. Ned swung with all his might, and the skeleton burst into bones. 'I got two!' Ned yelled. He held a bone up high.
'I will get a big pile of monster bits!' Ned yelled. He waved his bone. 'Give up, monsters!' Ned was having such fun being brave. Behind him came groans. Behind him came soft, sneaky steps. A huge mob of monsters had crept up to him. Ned turned.
There were so many monsters! Zombies and monsters were side by side, far into the dark. Ned was brave. But Ned was not silly. 'It is brave to run!' Ned yelled. He ran away faster than ever, with the mob right behind him.
Ned could see his home and the way in! But a big spider sat right by the door. It had big red legs and mean eyes, and looked at Ned like he was a fly. 'No way!' Ned yelled. The mob came up close behind him.
No time to think. No time to plan. No time to be afraid. Ned ran at the spider with his blade up high. One big swing, and the spider went pop! Ned ran inside. He shut the door tight.
Ned was inside, safe at last. The torchlight glowed bright on the log walls. A gold gem gleamed by his feet. Ned held it up and smiled. 'Same time next night, monsters.'
