Frequently Asked Questions
What are some words with or?
Everyday or words include for, or, corn, fork, horn, born, sort, short, storm and north. The same sound is spelled ore at the end of words like more, core, snore and store. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) called for plenty of practice reading connected text, not just word lists, so finding these words again in a story is a useful next step.
Why do or and ore make the same sound?
Both spellings stand for /or/, and the main difference is position. The ore spelling usually comes at the end of a word, as in more and shore, while or can appear anywhere, as in order, fork and for. The e in ore is silent and does not make the vowel long the way it does in hope, because the r is already controlling the sound.
What words end with or?
Short words like for, nor and or end in or with a clear /or/ sound. In longer words the ending -or often sounds more like /er/, as in doctor, actor and visitor, because that syllable is not stressed. Early practice is easier with one-syllable words, where the /or/ sound is clear, and our guide to what phonics is covers how these sound and spelling links are taught.
How do the books for UFLI Lesson 78 build on ar?
UFLI Lesson 78 adds or and ore after the ar sound, so the or decodable books on this page may also include ar words like car and farm. Switching between /ar/ and /or/ in one story asks children to look closely at each vowel rather than guess from the first letter. Some of these titles are free to read on the Bookbot website.
