Frequently Asked Questions

What sound does ch make in phonics?

In phonics, ch is a consonant digraph: two letters that spell a single sound, the /ch/ heard in chat, chip and rich. Children learn to see c and h as a pair, because sounding them out separately as /k/ and /h/ would not make a real word. Later they will also meet ch saying /k/, as in school, but beginning readers start with the /ch/ sound.

Should ch be called a phoneme or a digraph?

The answer is both, depending on what you are describing. The sound /ch/ is a single phoneme, the smallest unit of sound in a word, and the written pair ch is a digraph, the two letters used to spell it. Keeping the two ideas apart helps children see that the number of letters in a word is not always the number of sounds, which is at the heart of what phonics is and why it matters.

How can I teach the ch sound to my child?

Say the sound together and notice how it starts with the lips pushed forward and ends in a short burst of air, like a train going ch, ch, ch. Then show the letters, read simple words such as chap, chin and chop, and ask your child to tap once for the ch sound. The stories for UFLI Lesson 48 then give children a chance to use the new sound in real sentences.

What are some ch words for beginning readers?

Simple words that start with ch include chap, chat, chin, chip, chop, chug and check. The same digraph also appears at the end of words like much, rich and such, so children should look for it in both places. In a meta-analysis, Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics instruction helped children read words better than approaches without it.
