Frequently Asked Questions
Does ie always say long i?
In short words that end in ie, like pie, tie, lie and die, it says /ī/, which is the focus of this lesson. In some longer words, ie says /ē/ instead, as in chief, field and piece. Children can try /ī/ first in one-syllable words and switch to /ē/ if the word does not make sense.
What are some igh words in the -ight family?
Common igh words include high, sigh, night, light, right, tight, sight, bright, flight and might. The three letters work as one unit that says /ī/, with the gh silent. Because so many end in -ight, children can read a whole family once they know one word, and Stanovich (1986) described how early reading success feeds more reading.
Does the i before e rule help with ie words?
The rhyme ‘i before e except after c’ is about spelling the /ē/ sound, as in field and receive, and it has plenty of exceptions. For reading, the more useful guide here is that ie at the end of a short word says /ī/, as in pie and tie. Teaching the reading pattern first keeps this lesson simple, and the spelling rhyme can wait.
How can I support my child with the books for UFLI Lesson 87?
Before reading one of the ie and igh decodable books for UFLI Lesson 87, look at the title and pictures together and find any ie or igh words. As your child reads, praise careful decoding of words like night and tie rather than speed. Some titles are free to read online, and our ways to boost reading motivation have more ideas for keeping practice positive.
