Frequently Asked Questions

How do you tell if a syllable is open or closed?

Look at how the syllable ends. A closed syllable ends in a consonant that shuts in the vowel, so the vowel is usually short, as in hen or fox. An open syllable ends with the vowel itself, so the vowel usually says its name, as in be, go and hi. Children can cover the rest of the word and check whether that chunk ends in a vowel or a consonant.

What are some examples of open syllable words?

Good first examples are short words such as be, he, we, me, go, no, so and hi. Open syllables also begin many longer words, like ba in baby, ro in robot and ti in tiger. Sorting a pile of word cards into open and closed groups is a quick activity that helps children hear why the vowel sound changes.

Why do syllable types matter for multisyllabic words?

A long word is far easier to read once a child can split it into chunks and predict the vowel sound in each one. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that systematic phonics instruction benefits children from kindergarten through sixth grade, and syllable types carry that system from short words into multisyllabic words like napkin and robot. Our article on decoding and morphology shows how closed syllables grow into bigger words.

What do children work on in UFLI Lesson 66?

UFLI Lesson 66 focuses on closed and open syllables and on how the syllable type changes the vowel sound. The closed and open syllables decodable books on this page give children stories where they can apply that idea, mixing words like go and she with familiar short-vowel words. Some of them are free to read online, and many of the free titles include read-along audio.
