Frequently Asked Questions
What are long u words?
Long u words with silent e come in two groups. Some say /yoo/, like use, cube, cute, mule and fuse, and others say /oo/, like rude, June, rule and flute. Both use the u_e pattern, and UFLI Lesson 58 covers both sounds, so children learn to try one and check which makes a real word.
Are cute and cube long u words?
Cute and cube are both long u words that follow the u_e pattern, and in both the u says its full name, /yoo/. They make good first examples because the sound is easy to hear and the words are familiar to children. Once these feel easy, move on to words like rude and flute, where the same spelling says /oo/.
Is blue a long u word?
Blue has the /oo/ sound that u_e makes in rude and flute, and many teachers group that sound with long u. It is spelled with ue rather than u_e, though, so it follows a different pattern that children usually meet later, along with words like juice and fruit. For now, it helps to explain that the same sound can be spelled in more than one way.
How can I help my child read long u silent e words?
Start with a pair such as cub and cube, and show how the silent e changes the sound. Then read a short book together and pause on each u_e word, so your child can try /yoo/ first and switch to /oo/ if the word does not make sense. Stanovich (1986) showed that early reading success tends to snowball, because children who decode easily read more, and decodable text gives them that start.
