Frequently Asked Questions

What does the suffix -ment mean?

The suffix -ment usually turns a verb into a noun that names the action or its result. Pay becomes payment, ship becomes shipment, state becomes statement and treat becomes treatment. Some words, like moment and cement, end in the same letters without a base word inside, so ask whether a smaller word is hiding in front of the ending.

Does the base word change spelling when -ment is added?

Usually it does not, which makes -ment one of the friendlier suffixes. Because -ment starts with a consonant, a silent e stays put: amaze becomes amazement, excite becomes excitement and place becomes placement. One common exception is argue, which drops its e to become argument, so it is worth pointing out when it comes up.

How common is the suffix -ment?

The endings children meet most often are -s, -es, -ed and -ing, and -ment appears less often than those. It still shows up in many everyday words ending in -ment, such as basement, pavement, payment and excitement, and in words children hear at school, like agreement and equipment. Because it is so regular, it is a good suffix for building confidence with longer words.

What -ment words will my child read in these books?

The books for UFLI Lesson 125 use words such as payment, shipment, statement, basement, pavement, treatment, enjoyment, excitement and agreement. Most have a base word children already know, so they can read the base, add the ending and check the meaning. A meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics instruction helps children’s word reading, and building words from parts is part of that work.
