Frequently Asked Questions

How do you explain the suffix -ness to a child?

A simple way is to say that -ness means the state of being something. Kindness is being kind, darkness is being dark and stillness is being still. Asking your child to make up their own -ness word from a feeling, such as glad or sad, shows quickly whether the idea has clicked.

What are some positive words that end in -ness?

Many positive words ending in -ness describe how people treat each other: kindness, happiness, gladness, fairness, gentleness, politeness, sweetness and cleverness. They are useful beyond phonics, because they give children language for feelings and behavior. Pointing one out when a character shows it in a story connects the word to a real moment.

Why does happy become happiness but shy become shyness?

When a word ends in a consonant followed by y, the y usually changes to i before -ness, so happy becomes happiness, silly becomes silliness and empty becomes emptiness. Many one-syllable words keep their y, as in shyness, dryness and slyness. The base word does not double its last letter here, because -ness starts with a consonant, so sad simply becomes sadness.

What -ness words are in the books for this lesson?

The books for UFLI Lesson 124 use words like sadness, gladness, kindness, darkness, sickness, freshness, stillness, happiness and silliness. Because the base word stays easy to see, they are good words for showing how a suffix changes meaning, as our guide to decoding and morphology explains. Stanovich (1986) described how children who read more keep adding to their vocabulary, and each new -ness word adds to that store.
