Frequently Asked Questions

In what order are vowel teams usually taught?

Many phonics sequences start with the most common long vowel teams, such as ai and ay, ee and ea, and oa, before moving on to oo, ew, ui and ue. Diphthongs like oi, oy, ou and ow, and teams such as au and aw, usually come after that. The exact order varies from one phonics sequence to another, and our scope and sequence shows how the reading levels fit together.

What are some examples of vowel team syllables?

A vowel team syllable is a syllable where two or more letters work together to spell one vowel sound. Both parts of rainbow are vowel team syllables, as are the second part of cartoon and the first part of teacher. In the books for UFLI Lesson 92, children meet one-syllable words like moon and dew, which prepares them for longer words built from the same teams.

Which vowel teams in this review can make more than one sound?

The oo team says one sound in moon and a different one in book. The ew and ue teams can also start with a y sound, as in few and cue, or leave it out, as in flew and blue, depending on the word and the accent. When a word sounds wrong, children can try the other version and check which one makes sense in the sentence.

How can I tell when my child is ready to move past a review lesson?

A good sign is that your child reads the review words accurately and without long pauses, even when different teams are mixed on the same page. If one team still causes trouble, rereading a familiar story is often more useful than moving ahead. The report by Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) stressed that children need plenty of practice reading text before their reading becomes fluent.
