Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a rule for spelling ee or ea?

For reading, it does not matter much: both say /ē/, so feet and meat rhyme. For spelling, there is no reliable rule, and pairs like see and sea, meet and meat, or week and weak show that the spelling often tracks the meaning. Children learn which words use which team by reading them often, which is how orthographic mapping works.

Is ee a digraph?

Teachers call ee a vowel digraph or a vowel team, because two letters spell one sound, /ē/. The same is true of ea and ey in this lesson, and of other pairs children will meet soon, like oa in boat. Calling them teams reminds children to read the two letters together instead of sounding out each e on its own.

How do you teach ea and ee words?

Introduce one team at a time with a few clear words, such as see, tree and feet, and then eat, sea and leaf. Once both feel secure, sort mixed cards into ee and ea groups and read short sentences that use both. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) highlighted explicit teaching of spelling patterns and plenty of practice reading text, and a decodable story gives that practice in one place.

What do ey words sound like in UFLI Lesson 85?

In UFLI Lesson 85, ey spells /ē/ at the end of words such as key, monkey, donkey, valley and honey. It is less common than ee and ea, so children may meet only a few ey words in each of the ee, ea and ey decodable books. Watch for they and obey, where ey says /ā/ instead, and point these out when your child meets them.
