Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rule for changing y to i?

If a base word ends in a consonant plus y, the y turns into i when most suffixes are added: cry becomes cried and cries, dry becomes drier, and baby becomes babies. Keep the y when adding -ing, as in crying, and when a vowel comes before the y, as in played. Children working on UFLI Lesson 110 benefit from seeing the change and the exceptions side by side.

Why do we need to change y to i?

English spelling tends to use y at the end of a word and i in the middle, so when an ending makes the word longer, the y often switches to i. The -ing exception exists because criing would put two i’s side by side, which English spelling rarely allows. Explaining the reason, not just the rule, helps children remember it.

How do you know when y says long i?

At the end of a one-syllable word, y usually says long i, as in cry, dry, my, sky and fly. At the end of a longer word it usually says long e, as in happy and baby. Teaching children to count syllables first gives them a quick way to choose the right sound, and a meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found that this kind of systematic phonics instruction helped children learn to read.

When do you use ie or y for the long i sound?

The y spelling is the usual choice at the end of one-syllable words, as in cry, dry and sky. The ie spelling appears in a few short words like pie, tie and lie, and in forms made with the y to i rule, such as cried and dries. Seeing these words often in reading helps children store the right spelling, a process our guide to orthographic mapping explains.
