Frequently Asked Questions

How is hard c different from soft c?

Hard c says /k/, as in cat, cot and cup. Soft c says /s/, and it usually happens when c is followed by e, i or y, as in cent, city and cycle. Those three letters are called signal vowels because they signal the change, which gives children a quick check before they sound out a new word.

When does g make the soft /j/ sound?

The letter g often says /j/ when e, i or y comes next, as in gem, germ, giant and ginger. The same thing happens at the end of words spelled with ge or dge, such as age, cage, huge, badge and bridge. Teaching a pattern like this directly is part of systematic phonics, which a meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found helps children’s word reading.

Which common words break the soft g pattern?

Soft g is less dependable than soft c, and some very common words keep a hard g before e or i: get, give, girl, gift, begin and tiger. A good habit is to try the soft sound first, then switch to the hard sound if the word does not make sense. Soft c has far fewer exceptions, so it is usually the easier half of this pattern.

What soft c and soft g words are in these books?

The books for UFLI Lesson 117 use soft c words, including ce words like face, dance, fence and ice, plus city, circle and fancy, and soft g words like age, cage, huge, gem, giant, edge and bridge. Because both sounds belong to this lesson, children get used to checking the letter after c or g. Reading them in decodable text means each word is one they can work out from the letters.
