Frequently Asked Questions

What does the suffix -y mean?

The suffix -y usually means full of or having, and it turns a naming word into a describing word. Rain becomes rainy, dust becomes dusty and salt becomes salty, so a salty snack is full of salt. At the end of these words, -y says /ē/, which children will recognize from words like happy and funny.

How is the suffix -y different from -ly?

Among prefixes and suffixes, -y and -ly are easy to mix up, but they do different jobs. The suffix -y usually makes a describing word from a noun, as in dirt and dirty or storm and stormy. The suffix -ly usually tells how something is done, turning quick into quickly and soft into softly, although a few -ly words, like friendly, describe things too.

Why do some words change spelling when -y is added?

Two spelling rules often come into play. When a short word ends in one vowel and one consonant, the consonant doubles, so sun becomes sunny and fog becomes foggy. When a word ends in silent e, the e drops, so shine becomes shiny and smoke becomes smoky, because the new ending already brings a vowel sound.

Which words with the suffix -y are in these books?

The books for UFLI Lesson 123 use words such as sleepy, sticky, stormy, speedy, snowy, spicy, shiny, soggy and sunny. Some words, like tiny, very and story, end in y with no base word to take off, which makes a good talking point. Researchers at the University of Chicago found that a digital library for parents and children to share lifted young children’s literacy skills, and some titles here are free to read online.
