Frequently Asked Questions
What are the split digraphs?
English has five common split digraphs: a_e as in cake, e_e as in these, i_e as in time, o_e as in home and u_e as in cube. Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 6 completes the set with e_e and u_e, after a_e, i_e and o_e in the unit before. Children can then read all five long vowels with the same move, spotting the final e and going back to change the vowel.
Is ee a split digraph?
The ee spelling is a vowel digraph, but it is not split, because the two letters sit together, as in see and tree. The split version is e_e, which makes the same /ee/ sound with a consonant in between, as in these, eve and theme. Children often find e_e harder to spot, since far fewer everyday words use it.
What are some e_e and u_e words?
For e_e, useful words include these, theme, eve, Pete and Steve, and for u_e, cube, cute, mule, use, tune and flute. The u_e spelling can make two slightly different sounds: the /ue/ in cube and a sound closer to /oo/ in flute and June. Because split digraph e_e words appear less often in stories, a book that repeats them gives children valuable extra practice.
Why are long vowels taught after short vowels?
Short vowels come first because they appear in the simplest words, so children can start reading CVC words almost straight away. Long vowels need a second letter, whether that is a final e or a vowel team, so they make more sense once short vowel words feel easy. Chall’s Stages of Reading Development describe this early period as one of learning to decode, before reading becomes fluent.
