Frequently Asked Questions
What are the two oo sounds?
The spelling oo has a long sound, as in moon, zoo and food, and a short oo sound, as in book, good and foot. They are taught together in Group 5, so children learn early that the same two letters can say more than one thing. Saying both sounds side by side, oo as in moon and oo as in book, helps children hear the difference.
How do children know which oo sound to use?
There is no fixed rule, so the best habit is to try one sound, then the other, and pick the one that makes a real word that fits the sentence. One helpful pattern is that oo before k is usually short, as in book, look, cook and took. Accents vary too, so words like room and roof may sound different from one family to the next.
What fun oo words will children read in Group 5?
The books for the Jolly Phonics oo sounds use plenty of playful words: zoo, moon, spoon, broom, boot and zoom for the long sound, and book, cook, hook, wood and foot for the short one. Longer words like igloo, kazoo, bamboo and baboon are fun to read aloud too. When a story mixes both sounds, children have to check each word rather than guess.
Is oo a vowel team?
The pair oo is one of the vowel teams, where two vowel letters work together to make one sound. Teachers also call it a digraph, meaning two letters and one sound. Snow, Burns and Griffin (1998) point to the value of regular practice with common spelling patterns, and oo is one children will see in a great many everyday words.
