Frequently Asked Questions
Is er a digraph?
Er counts as a digraph, because the letters e and r combine to spell one sound, the /er/ in her, fern and term. Teachers often call it an r-controlled vowel too, since the r changes the vowel so it no longer sounds like the short e in hen. In Jolly Phonics, er is taught in Group 7, and children later learn ir and ur as other ways to write the same sound.
What are some er words for early readers?
Short er words such as her, herd, term, fern and verb make a good start, because the rest of each word uses sounds children already know. Two-syllable words like under, winter, sister and ever put er at the end, where it turns up most often. Reading r controlled er words in short stories gives children many chances to spot the pattern and read it quickly.
Why do so many describing words end in er?
Adding er is one of the main ways English compares two things, as in faster, taller and softer, and it also turns an action into a person, as in farmer, painter and helper. Because the ending is spelled the same way each time, children who know er can read a large number of longer words. Spotting a familiar ending is part of reading bigger words, which our article on decoding and morphology explores.
Which words have er in the middle?
In short words, er often sits in the middle, as in herd, fern, term, perch and stern. It also turns up inside longer words, where one syllable ends in er and the next one begins, as in understand, afternoon and thunderstorm. Clapping a word like un-der-stand, then finding the er part, helps children read a long word in manageable chunks.
