Frequently Asked Questions
What is the soft g rule?
When g comes before e, i or y, it often makes a soft /j/ sound, as in gem, giant and gym. Before a, o or u, it stays hard, as in gap, got and gum. Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 3 teaches ge, gi and gy as soft g spellings, and children soon find that this rule works less reliably for g than for c.
Which words break the soft g rule?
Quite a few everyday words keep a hard g before e or i, including get, girl, give, gift, begin and tiger. Because of these, children should treat the soft g rule as a strong hint rather than a guarantee, and check that the word they read makes sense. Words like these are learned through repeated reading, until the spelling and sound are linked in memory, which our guide to orthographic mapping explains.
What are some soft g words?
Useful soft g words include gem, germ, gel, giant, ginger, magic, energy and gym. At the end of a word the soft g sound is often spelled ge, as in age, cage, page and large, which makes ge words a good place to start. Children can look at the letter after each g to predict whether it will sound hard or soft.
How are soft g and soft c alike?
Both letters change sound before e, i or y, so soft c says /s/ in city and soft g says /j/ in gym. Meeting soft c and soft g one after the other, as Step 3 does, lets children apply one idea to two letters. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) argued that children need explicit teaching of spelling-sound patterns, and pairing these two makes one such pattern easier to see.
