Frequently Asked Questions
What is the split digraph rule?
A split digraph is two letters that work together to make one vowel sound, with a consonant between them, and the e at the end changes the first vowel to its long sound. So cap becomes cape, pin becomes pine and hop becomes hope. In Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 5, children learn a_e, i_e and o_e first, reading words like ace, ape, cake, kite and bone.
Is ae a split digraph?
The split digraph is written a_e, with the line showing where a consonant sits, as in cake, gate and lane. The letters ae written side by side are rare in English and are not a spelling children need for early reading. Running a finger from the a to the e helps children see that the two letters belong together even with a letter between them.
What are some magic e words?
Good magic e words for this unit include cake, gate, lane and name for a_e, ride, time, kite and pine for i_e, and bone, home, rope and stone for o_e. Long a words like cake and gate are often the easiest place to start, because children can compare them directly with cap and gap. Reading all three spellings in the same story asks children to look to the end of each word before deciding how to say the vowel.
Why is it called magic e?
Many teachers call it magic e because adding an e to the end of a word seems to change the vowel’s sound, turning tap into tape. The e itself stays silent, which is why the pattern is also called silent e, and some schools prefer the term split digraph. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) emphasized that early readers need a clear grasp of how spellings map onto sounds, whatever name a pattern is given.
