Frequently Asked Questions
What is the phonic sound for x?
In most words, x says /ks/, which is really two sounds, /k/ and /s/, made quickly together. That makes x unusual among the letter sounds, because most letters stand for a single sound. Try saying box slowly, b-o-ks, and your child will hear both parts. Many children enjoy noticing that fox has three letters but four sounds.
Why do so many x words end in x?
In short English words, x usually comes at the end, as in box, fox, six, mix and wax, or in the middle, as in next and text. Words that start with x, such as xylophone, usually say /z/ instead, which is why alphabet charts that use xylophone can confuse beginners. Words ending in x give a much clearer example of the /ks/ sound.
What x words are in these books?
The books for the Jolly Phonics x sound use short words like ox, box, fox, six, mix, fix and wax, and slightly longer ones like next, text, vixen and sixteen. Compound words such as sandbox, mailbox, toolbox and textbook can appear too, giving confident readers something bigger to tackle. Books at home count as well: across 35 countries, Manu et al. (2019) linked having children’s books at home with stronger early literacy.
How do I help my child blend words with x?
Blend the sounds before the x first, then add a quick /ks/: f-o, then fox. If your child says fok or fos, go back and stretch the ending so they hear both parts. A few words a day, followed by a short story, keeps it light, and our guide to phonemic awareness has more simple sound games.
