Frequently Asked Questions

What sound does the letter w make?

The letter w makes a quick /w/ sound with rounded lips, as if starting to say oo, and no teeth touching. As with other letter sounds, encourage your child to say it without a big uh on the end, so wig blends as w-i-g rather than wuh-i-g. The sound glides straight into the vowel after it, which is why it can feel slippery to beginners.

How can children tell the v and w sounds apart?

The two sounds come close together in Group 5, and some children mix them up. For /v/, the top teeth rest on the bottom lip and the sound buzzes. For /w/, the lips make a small circle and the teeth stay out of the way, so saying pairs like wet and vet or west and vest in front of a mirror makes the difference easy to see and feel.

What w words can children read at this stage?

The books for the Jolly Phonics w sound use CVC w words like wig, win, wet, web, wag and wok, blends such as swim, swap, twig and twist, and words that mix in Group 4 sounds, like wait, weed, week and sweet. You may also notice that a after w can sound more like /o/, as in swan and swap. It is worth pointing out, because it shows children that letters sometimes shift their sound.

How can I help with w practice at home?

Read a w story together, then go back and let your child find every word that starts with w. Short, regular sessions work well, and talking about the story matters as much as the decoding. Bus, van IJzendoorn and Pellegrini (1995) found that reading books together is related to children’s language growth and early reading.
