Frequently Asked Questions
What does ea usually say in phonics?
The main rule is that ea usually makes the long /ee/ sound, as in eat, sea, beach and dream, and that is the sound taught in Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 8. It is a vowel team, so the two letters make one sound together. Children will later find that ea can also say /e/ in words like head and bread, so it helps to try /ee/ first and then check the word makes sense.
How can children tell whether a word takes ee or ea?
Both spellings make the same /ee/ sound in the same positions, as in seed and bead or feet and meat, so no reliable rule separates them. Children sort out which words take ea by reading them many times, which our guide to orthographic mapping explains. Word pairs that sound the same but mean different things, like see and sea or meet and meat, are a fun way to show why the spelling matters.
How do you teach the ea digraph?
Start with words your child can already say, such as eat and sea, and show them that ea is one sound written with two letters. Then read short ea decodable books together so they see the spelling in sentences, and ask them to find the ea words on each page. According to the National Reading Panel (2000), reading aloud to an adult who listens and gives feedback improves both fluency and comprehension.
What are some ea words?
Good ea long e words include eat, sea, tea, pea, each, read, beach, team, leaf, meal and dream. Most are short and familiar, so children can decode them and link them straight to meaning. Once those feel easy, longer words such as easy and teacher add a challenge with the same vowel team.
