Frequently Asked Questions
What is the phonic sound for y?
At the start of a word, y makes the consonant sound /y/, as in yes, yak and yum. The middle of the tongue rises close to the roof of the mouth, then slides into the vowel. As with other letter sounds, keep it short, saying y-e-s rather than yuh-e-s, so the sounds blend cleanly.
What are the four sounds of the letter y?
The letter y can say /y/ as in yes, /ee/ as in happy, /ie/ as in cry and, less often, a short /i/ as in gym. In Group 6, children learn only the first one, where y starts a word. The /ee/ sound comes in Step 2, Unit 1, and the /ie/ sound joins igh in a later unit of Step 2, so each use of y gets its own turn.
What y words can young children read?
The books for the Jolly Phonics y sound use short words such as yes, yet, yak, yam, yap, yum and yuck, with blends like yelp and yank. There are only a handful of words like these, so you may see the same ones across several stories. That repetition is useful, because reading a word several times helps children recognize it quickly.
How can pictures help with new words like yak and yam?
Words like yak and yam may be new to your child, even once they can sound them out. Looking at the picture after reading the word helps connect the sounds to a meaning. Takacs and Bus (2020) found that illustrations matched to the text support young readers’ attention and comprehension, so a quick chat about the picture is worth the time.
