Frequently Asked Questions
What words have u_e in them?
Words with u_e include cube, cute, mule, tube, use, tune, June and flute. The final e is silent and changes the u to its long sound, the same way it does in cake and home. Children first met u_e earlier in Step 2, and Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 12 brings it back beside ue and ew, so all three spellings of /ue/ sit together.
Which ew words come up most in stories?
Common ew words include new, few, dew, stew, grew, flew, drew, blew, chew and crew. The ew spelling usually comes at the end of a word, which is where children should expect it. Because words like new and few turn up so often in stories, ew is one of the more useful vowel teams to read quickly and confidently.
How many ways can you spell the long u sound?
The long u sound has several common spellings: ue as in due, ew as in few, u_e as in cube, and u on its own at the end of a syllable, as in music and unit. This unit focuses on the first three, which cover many everyday words. Knowing all of them helps children read long u words they have never seen before, rather than guessing.
Why do some ue and ew words sound like /oo/?
After letters such as l, r, j and ch, the long u often loses its y sound and comes out closer to /oo/, as in blue, true, grew, chew and June. Children read these with the same spellings but may hear a slightly different sound, which varies by accent too. Saying both versions aloud and asking which one sounds like a real word is a simple way to handle it, and paired reading gives children a fluent model to follow.
