Practice Words
Jan stands at the chain mesh and has a look. A new kid kicks a ball up high. Tap, tap, tap! It never drops. 'I can do that,' says Jan.
Jan zips in a gap in the mesh. Kip, the new kid, kicks the ball up high. Down it comes. Thud! It hits Jan's chest. Jan's cap is askew, but he grins. 'A chest trap!'
They play, and Kip is fast. He is shrewd with the ball. He zips past Jan. Jan pants and pants. His legs shake. 'I am fine,' he puffs. 'Just fine.'
Jan stops and has a look. Tap, tap! Kip taps the ball from foot to foot. Not one tap is askew. It never slips off. 'What a kid,' says Jan.
'Time out!' Jan yells. 'Time out, Kip!' But Kip zips on with the ball. Jan darts in to grab it, but Kip is off. 'Has this kid no curfew?' Jan puffs.
Crack! Jan boots the ball with all he has. Up, up it sails, off the ground and on to the road. 'No!' gasps Jan. Kip darts after it.
Kip runs on to the road. He bends down to grab the ball. A bike zooms at him, just a few steps off. 'Stop, Kip! Stop!' Jan yells. But Kip never stops. Jan runs.
Jan grabs Kip by the hand and drags him back. The bike zips by. They drop down on the dewy grass, safe. Kip grips Jan's hand and grins.
Jan and Kip sit on the hill. The sky is gold. Jan lets out a long puff. He is glad to sit with his new pal. Kip bumps his arm. Jan bumps him back.
Kip spells his name in the dirt. Then he spells it anew with his hands. Jan gets it now. Kip spells with his hands, not with sounds. That is why he never turns when Jan yells.
Jan tries to spell with his hands, but his hands go all askew. So he spells his name in the dirt. Kip looks at it and grins a big grin.
Jan and Kip lie back on the ground. The sky is gold. Two balls rest by them. Jan grins. What a day! He has a ball, and he has a newfound pal.
