Frequently Asked Questions
How do you know when to use er, ir or ur?
A single rule will not cover every word, but there are patterns. The er spelling is the most common at the end of longer words, as in sister, winter and teacher, while ir and ur often sit in the middle of short words, as in bird, first, turn and burn. Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 11 brings the three spellings together, and for less predictable words children learn the spelling by meeting it often.
What are the sounds of ar, er, ir and ur?
The ar spelling makes its own sound, the /ar/ in car and park. The other three, er, ir and ur, all make the same /er/ sound, heard in her, bird and turn. Each is an r-controlled vowel, where the r alters the vowel before it, which is why r controlled vowels are usually taught as a group.
What are some ir and ur words?
Good ir words include bird, girl, first, shirt, third, stir, dirt and fir, and good ur words include turn, burn, hurt, curl, fur and church. Words ending in ir are rare, with sir, fir and stir among the few everyday examples. Sorting word cards into er, ir and ur piles, then checking them in a book, is a quick way to make the spellings stick.
Why do er, ir and ur make the same sound?
In earlier English these spellings stood for slightly different sounds, which later merged into one. The spellings stayed the same, which is why her, bird and turn share a vowel sound but not a spelling. For children, the practical point is that er, ir and ur are three spellings of one sound, and Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics supported young children’s spelling as well as their reading.
