Frequently Asked Questions
Are oi and oy diphthongs?
Both spellings stand for the same diphthong, the /oi/ sound in oil, coin and boy. A diphthong is a vowel sound that glides, so your mouth starts in one shape and finishes in another as you say it. Children meeting the Jolly Phonics oi sound in Group 7 learn the oi spelling first, and oy follows later as an alternative spelling in Step 2.
Is there a rule for when to use oi or oy?
Most of the time, oi appears in the middle of a word, as in coin, soil and point, while oy comes at the end of a word or syllable, as in boy, toy and enjoy. The pattern holds for most everyday words, so it is worth teaching once children know both spellings. It is especially helpful for spelling, because children can choose the right letters from where the sound falls.
What oi words can early readers decode?
Early oi words include oil, boil, coin, join, soil, foil and point, and slightly longer ones such as spoil and moist add a consonant blend. These oi words use letter sounds children know by Group 7, so they can be decoded rather than guessed. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) stressed that beginning readers need frequent exposure to regular spelling-sound patterns, which is the thinking behind oi decodable books.
How can I help my child read oi words at home?
Try a quick sound hunt: say words such as coin, noise or toilet and ask your child whether they hear /oi/, then write them so they can see the spelling. Reading a short story together, with your child reading the words they can decode, keeps practice relaxed, and our guide to paired reading has more ideas. A meta-analysis by Bus, van IJzendoorn and Pellegrini (1995) linked shared book reading with children’s language growth and later reading achievement.
