Frequently Asked Questions
What sound does qu make?
The pair qu says /kw/, a /k/ sound followed straight away by a /w/ sound, as in queen and quack. Children learn q and u together because q is almost never used without u in English. Saying the two sounds quickly, rather than separately, helps words like quest blend smoothly.
What is the qu rule?
The main rule is that q is followed by u in English words, so children can treat qu as a unit. The rare exceptions are borrowed words and names, such as Qatar. You may also notice that a after qu often sounds like /o/, as in squash and squad, which matches what happens after w.
Is qu a digraph or a blend?
Teachers describe it both ways. Many call it the qu digraph, because the two letters travel together, but it sounds like a blend, because you can hear two sounds, /k/ and /w/. For young readers, the label matters less than the habit of reading qu as one chunk whenever they see it.
What qu words can children read in Group 7?
The books for the Jolly Phonics qu sound use words such as quack, quad, queen, quest, quench and quaint, plus blends like squad, squat, squash and squelch. Jeanne Chall described early reading as a decoding stage, when a child’s main job is linking letters to sounds, and lively words like squelch make that job more enjoyable. Group 7 is the last of the letter-sound groups, so these words bring together much of what children have learned.
