Frequently Asked Questions
What sound does ue make in Jolly Phonics?
In Jolly Phonics, ue stands for the /ue/ sound, the long u you hear in cue, due and rescue. Children learn it in Group 7, near the end of Step 1, as a vowel team where two letters make one sound. In some words, such as blue and glue, the same letters make a sound closer to /oo/, so children can try both and check which one makes a real word.
What are some ue words for beginning readers?
Good ue words for early readers include cue, due, hue, value, argue and rescue, where ue makes the long u sound. Words such as glue, blue, true and clue use the same spelling, although many speakers say them with a sound closer to /oo/. Reading these words in short sentences, rather than only in lists, helps children link the spelling to meaning, which is the idea behind decodable text.
Why do so many words end in ue?
English words rarely end in the letter u on its own, so when the long u sound falls at the end of a word it is often spelled ue, as in due, argue and statue. The final e is part of the vowel team, not a separate sound, which is a helpful point to make when children first try to sound it out. Later in Step 2, children meet ew and u_e as other spellings of the same sound.
How do you know when to use ue or ew?
There is no rule that works every time, because both spellings can end a word, as in due and few or cue and new. Children usually learn which spelling belongs to which word by meeting it often in their reading. Stanovich (1986) showed that children who read more build word knowledge faster, which is one reason regular reading matters so much at this stage.
