Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ck rule?
The ck spelling is used for the /k/ sound straight after a short vowel, most often at the end of a short word, as in back, neck, kick, lock and duck. After a long vowel, a consonant or a vowel team, the sound is usually spelled k instead, as in cake, milk and book. Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 3 pairs ck with a short vowel review, and the two ideas work together.
Why does ck never start a word?
English words do not begin with ck, because the spelling only appears after a short vowel. At the start of a word, the /k/ sound is written c or k, as in cat or kit. Inside longer words, ck can sit in the middle, as in pocket, jacket and chicken, but it still follows a short vowel.
Which ck words suit early readers?
Familiar ck words include back, pack, sock, rock, duck, kick, sick, neck and truck, and longer ones like snack, clock and stuck add a blend. Words ending in ck are common in stories for young children, so reading the pattern quickly lets children manage more text. Stanovich (1986) showed how early success with decoding leads children to read more, and that extra reading widens their vocabulary.
Why is ck counted as one sound?
The pair ck is a digraph, because c and k join to spell a single sound, /k/, just like sh or ch. Children usually meet ck early, alongside c and k, and this unit revisits it as one of the alternative spellings of /k/. Seeing ck as one unit, rather than two letters to sound separately, stops children from saying the sound twice when they blend.
