Anansi, the Hole Is Mute Jolly Phonics · Step 2, Unit 6: long vowels
Practice Words
This is Kofi's farm, and the sun is hot. Kofi has a big prize melon in the shade. Anansi cuts a hole and slips in to consume the sweet melon. Munch, munch, munch!
Anansi munches and munches inside the melon. Anansi's belly swells to an extreme size. Now Anansi is stuck. The hole is not big, and Anansi can not slip back out.
Kofi pats the prize melon and smiles. Kofi does not see the trick. Then Elephant stomps past on the road, and Anansi has a plan. A ruse!
'Elephant! Stop and chat with me!' calls the melon. This confuses Elephant. A melon that can chat? Elephant flees. Boom, boom! One Elephant, one big stampede.
Soon all get the tale, and all come to gaze at the melon. 'The rain will come soon!' calls the melon. All gasp. The ruse dupes all.
The King gets the tale next. The King's staff lift the melon and take it to the big room. Anansi did not include this in the plan!
All pack into the big room. The King bends to the melon. 'Melon, chat with me,' the King asks. Will Anansi stay mute? No, never Anansi!
'The lost drumstick is by the jar!' calls the melon. It is true, and these lucky picks dupe the King. The staff gasp, but Kofi is not glad.
Then Abena steps up to the stand. 'Melon, tell me my plan,' Abena asks. Anansi can not compute this, and the big room is mute.
'This melon dupes me!' the King fumes, and up he jumps. He flings the melon. All gasp as it spins up.
Smash! The melon splits into a complete mess. Out rolls Anansi, fat and stained. 'It was Anansi all this time!' Kofi yells. All clap and grin.
The King lets Anansi go home. On the road, Anansi picks melon pulp from one leg. Anansi concludes: it is rude to intrude, and a snug melon can be a trap. Kofi will keep Anansi off the crop next time.
