Frequently Asked Questions
When does y say /ee/ at the end of a word?
In words of more than one syllable, a final y usually makes the /ee/ sound, as in army, body, windy and misty. This is the focus of Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 1, the first alternative spelling children meet after the 42 letter sounds. In one-syllable words such as my and fly, y says /ie/ instead, which children learn later in Step 2.
What are some words ending in y that say /ee/?
Words such as windy, sandy, misty, dusty, lucky, army and body suit this unit, because every other sound in them comes from Step 1. Most have two syllables, so children can clap the beats, read the first part, and finish with the /ee/ sound. Words with double letters, such as happy and funny, fit a little later, once double letters are taught in Step 2, Unit 4.
Is y a vowel or a consonant?
It can be either. At the start of a word, as in yes and yell, y is a consonant, but at the end of a word it works as a vowel, saying /ee/ in body and /ie/ in fly. That double role is why y as a vowel is an early alternative spelling in Step 2, and reading it in real sentences helps children decide which sound to try.
What is the correct order to teach phonics?
Most systematic approaches start with a small set of letter sounds that make many simple words, then add the remaining sounds and digraphs, and only then move on to alternative spellings like this one. A meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found that phonics taught systematically, in a planned sequence, helped children learn to read more than unsystematic or no phonics teaching. Our scope and sequence shows how Bookbot orders these skills in its own levels.
