Frequently Asked Questions
What is the soft c rule in phonics?
The letter c usually says a soft /s/ when e, i or y comes next, as in cell, city and cycle. In front of a, o, u or another consonant, it stays hard and says /k/, as in cap, cod, cub and crab. Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 2 teaches the soft c spellings ce, ci and cy, so children learn to look at the next letter before deciding how to read c.
What is the difference between hard c and soft c?
Hard c is the /k/ sound in cat and cub, and soft c is the /s/ sound in cent and ice. Both come from the same letter, and the letter after c usually tells you which one to use. Once children can spot e, i or y after c, soft c words such as rice, dance and pencil become much easier to read.
Does face have a soft c?
Face has a soft c, because the c comes before an e, so it says /s/. The same pattern shows up in race, ice, mice and dance, where ce gives the soft sound at the end of the word. Face is a helpful example because it also uses the a_e split digraph, so it combines two spellings children know.
Which words use hard and soft c together?
Words such as circus, cycle, bicycle and concert contain both sounds, which makes them excellent for showing how the next letter changes c. In circus, the first c is soft because i follows it, and the second is hard because u follows it. Talking through each c in words like these builds the habit of checking the next letter, and Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics helped beginning readers decode words they had not seen before.
