Frequently Asked Questions
What sound does ee make in phonics?
In phonics, ee is a vowel digraph that makes the long /ee/ sound, as in see, tree, feet and green. It is usually the first spelling of this sound children learn, and in Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 5 it returns alongside ea and e_e. Because ee is so regular, it builds confidence, since two e letters together almost always say /ee/.
How common are e_e words?
Split digraph e_e words are fairly rare in English compared with ee and ea. Common examples include these, theme, eve, scene, complete and the name Pete, and many others are longer words. Because children meet them less often, it helps to point them out when they appear in a story and compare them with ee words that sound the same.
What words start with ee or ea?
Very few everyday words begin with ee, with eel and eerie among the main examples, but plenty begin with ea, such as eat, each, east, easy and eager. That makes ea the more likely spelling at the start of a word. When the /ee/ sound opens a word, it is usually spelled ea or simply e, as in even and equal.
Is there a rule for ee words?
The ee spelling can appear at the start, middle or end of a word, as in eel, feet and tree, so position does not settle it. At the end of a short word, ee is more common than ea, as in see, free and three, although sea, tea and pea are important exceptions. Children learn which one a word takes mostly by reading it often, and Stanovich (1986) showed how reading more builds word knowledge in a cycle that keeps growing.
